Workshop Description: Maine is My World GIS!
In this interactive lesson, delve further into the world of geotechnology by learning about My World GIS™, a Geographic Information System (GIS) software program loaded on all MLTI laptops. Using GIS in the classroom can meet interdisciplinary curriculum goals, engage students in dynamic problem-based learning, and give students essential skills they will need to succeed. GIS has been described as “the future of data analysis.” Its ability to present information through dynamic maps has wide appeal. My World GIS™, a program available on MLTI laptops, offers many of the benefits to students as professional GIS software. Follow along as we work through a Maine-based GIS project and get a taste of My World GIS™ classroom potential. The strengths and weaknesses of the program will be discussed and data will be made available for participants so they can later follow along with the presentation. Maine is your students’ world, help them map it! This lesson is a work-in-progress and will be included in a compilation of data and lessons called MaineGIS which will be made available to Maine educators during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Workshop Presenters: Stephen Engle and Joel Alex
Stephen Engle is GIS professional and trainer with 15 years experience working in Maine, nationally and internationally. Currently, he directs the Center for Community GIS, a non-profit mapping support center based in Farmington. Joel Alex is a graduate of Colby College and former environmental educator at FBES. An AmeriCorps Member and Educational GIS Specialist, Joel currently works at the Center for Community GIS where he develops innovative GIS curriculum for formal and informal educators.
